Rice Energy Program initiative on Energy Policy and Nanoscience. Second workshop in a series of three. In light of repeating oil supply disruptions and emerging environmental pressures, the international energy industry and scientific community are looking to non-conventional solutions to confront our ongoing energy security concerns. Energy is not just a critical concern to the United States, but also a global one. Among the most important technical challenges facing the world in the 21st century is providing clean, affordable energy, whose supply is sustainable and universally available. A solution to the global energy problem will require revolutionary new technology, as well as conservation and evolutionary improvements in existing technologies. The James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy, the Environmental and Energy Systems Institute, the Richard E. Smalley Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology and the Shell Center for Sustainability sponsored a workshop to investigate potential contributions of solar-derived energy to a more efficient electricity grid in the United States and the role of nanoscience in advancing solar technology.
An experiment in nanotechnology to observe how nano particles change. Observing Part A and part B of the Gold particles experiment. Part A: Synthesising gold nanoparticles Method: Pour 50mL of gold hydrogen tetrachloride (HAuCl4 .3H2O) solution in a 150mL flask. Place a magnetic stirrer in the flask and place a watch glass on top of the flask (to ensure that no evaporation occurs – the concentration of the solution must remain constant) Place the flask with the gold solution on the hot plate, adjust the dials to allow the solution to heat (not vigorously) Heat until boiling, turn heat off, and leave the stirrer on. Part B: Testing for the presense of Gold Nanoparticles. Method: Shine a laser beam through each of the solutions. The presence of a colloidal suspension can be detected by the reflection of a laser beam from the particles. Record your observations in the table provided.

Michael C. McAlpine Michael McAlpine began his appointment as assistant professor of Mechanical Engineering at Princeton in 2008 and is an associated faculty member with the Princeton Department of Chemistry and the Princeton Institute for the Science and Technology of Materials (PRISM). He received a BS in chemistry with honors from Brown University in 2000 and a PhD in chemistry from Harvard University in 2006. His research has focused on nanotechnology-enabled approaches to hybridize high-performance inorganic materials with flexible organics, for fundamental investigations in the biomedical and energy sciences. His work has been published in journals such as Nature and featured in major media outlets including Time Magazine. He has given talks at several universities and conferences, most notably to the JASONs Defense Advisory Group. He has received a number of awards, most prominently a TR35 Young Innovator Award, an Air Force Young Investigator Award, an Intelligence Community Young Investigator Award, a DuPont Young Investigator Award, and an American Asthma Foundation Early Excellence Award. Abstract: Nanotechnology-Enabled Advances in Biomedical and Energy Research The development of a method for interfacing high-performance devices with flexible, stretchable, and biocompatible materials could yield breakthroughs in implantable or wearable systems. Yet, most high-quality materials are hard or rigid in nature, and the crystallization of these materials generally …
